The interview with Industry creators Mickey Down and Konrad Kay provides insight into the show’s third season finale and teases future developments.7 The finale completes the fracturing of the core characters, especially antiheroine Harper Stern, whose journey has been one of defiance and individualism. After her firing in Season 2, Harper returns in Season 3 to start her own fund, emphasizing her inability to work within a team, even when it’s in her interest. This mirrors Eric Tao’s arc, where he becomes more like Harper by betraying his moral compass for personal gain, a clear reflection of capitalist themes.

The series also explores the dissolution of partnerships and relationships that once seemed central. Yasmin, for instance, opts for a safe, emotionally detached life with Henry Muck rather than a romantic relationship with Robert, revealing the transactional nature of their bond. The creators emphasize that the characters were always defined by the environment of Pierpoint, rather than genuine personal connections.

The show’s depiction of class dynamics is prominent, with Harper coming from a working-class background and consistently rejecting any form of stability or traditional success. Her ruthless, lone-wolf mentality, refusing to be part of a team, especially with Petra, highlights the individualistic struggle within corporate and capitalist structures. The death of Rishi’s wife further destabilizes the viewer’s expectations, emphasizing the real-world consequences in a capitalist world that the show continues to portray in evolving ways.

In essence, Industry offers a deep exploration of class, power, and personal ambition within a ruthlessly competitive environment. The creators aren’t interested in comfortable conclusions, instead pushing the characters (and viewers) into uncomfortable moral and existential corners. Harper’s trajectory, in particular, resonates with the antiheroine arc — she’s someone who’s compelling because of her flaws and defiance, especially for those who can relate to her struggle against conformity and teamwork.

Dante#

The “comedy” in The Divine Comedy comes from its structure and resolution, rather than humor in the modern sense. Dante follows a medieval literary tradition where a “comedy” refers to a story that begins in tragedy or difficulty but ends in happiness or triumph. In The Divine Comedy, Dante starts in the dark, terrifying Inferno, representing sin and despair, but ultimately ascends through Purgatory and reaches the divine light of Heaven, symbolizing redemption and union with God.

That said, there are moments of dark humor and irony, especially in Inferno. Dante often portrays the damned souls with a sense of grim absurdity, mocking their earthly sins and mistakes. Some examples include the depiction of flatterers wading through excrement or politicians being boiled in pitch. The punishments themselves are exaggerated, often grotesquely tailored to the sins committed. It’s a twisted sense of poetic justice, which can evoke a sardonic smile.

Dante also sometimes adds humor through his interactions with historical figures or personal enemies, whom he encounters in hellish circumstances. For instance, he shows little mercy to the fate of his political rivals, and his portrayal of them might strike a knowing reader of his time as comical in a biting, satirical way.

So, the “comedy” here is more about the journey from confusion to clarity, damnation to salvation, with some moments of biting irony and sharp personal jabs woven in.

Humor#

The Coen brothers’ films, with their dark humor, moral ambiguity, and often absurd situations, do seem like a kind of reverse Divine Comedy. If Dante ascends toward clarity and redemption in Paradiso, the Coens often lead their characters deeper into chaos, confusion, and despair, much like a descent into Dante’s Inferno.

Take No Country for Old Men, for example: the characters are trapped in an unforgiving, nihilistic world, and as the story progresses, the moral boundaries blur. Fate, much like Dante’s divine justice, is inescapable, but in the Coens’ universe, it lacks any sense of redemptive order. You could argue that their films are like a tragic inversion, where instead of moving toward divine resolution, characters descend into ever-increasing moral entropy.

Their style is rooted in irony, existential futility, and absurdity. Rather than the neatly tailored punishments of Dante’s hell, the Coens’ characters are often blindsided by random, chaotic events. And while there’s certainly dark humor in both—Dante uses it to underscore the justice of the universe, while the Coens seem to suggest that maybe the universe doesn’t care at all.

In a sense, Inferno is where they’d be most comfortable: the universe of Chigurh or The Big Lebowski is one where people are at the mercy of forces they can’t control, and any upward trajectory is just an illusion, much like Dante’s condemned souls eternally chasing futile desires. It’s like if Dante’s moral arc got flipped, flattened, and laughed at by fate itself.

Anti-Dante#

A Serious Man is probably the most Divine Comedy-like of the Coen brothers’ films, but twisted in its own way. It’s a modern retelling of the Book of Job, where the protagonist, Larry Gopnik, is subjected to relentless suffering and confusion without any clear moral or divine resolution. It’s almost like the Coens took Dante’s Purgatorio, where souls are tested and cleansed, but stripped away any sense of ultimate meaning or direction.

In A Serious Man, Larry’s world is absurd, chaotic, and unjust, much like Dante’s Inferno, but with a heavy dose of existential dread. He keeps seeking answers—going to rabbis, trying to do the right thing, making sense of his suffering—but instead of ascending toward any form of redemption, he’s met with ambiguity, cryptic messages, and, ultimately, what seems to be impending doom (that tornado at the end!). It’s as if Larry is stuck in a purgatorial loop, but one without the certainty of salvation or even clear punishment.

The humor in A Serious Man is so dry and absurd, you almost have to laugh at Larry’s relentless misfortune, much like Dante’s wry mockery of certain souls in hell. But unlike Dante, where every soul’s suffering has a moral logic, Larry’s plight seems utterly pointless. There’s no divine comedy here—just cosmic indifference. In that sense, the Coens are almost the anti-Dante, presenting a universe where the only “comedy” is the absurdity of trying to find meaning in a random, uncaring cosmos.

It’s as if the Coens are saying, “Here’s your journey, but don’t expect an orderly ascent toward paradise—in fact, expect nothing at all.”
